Description
As payors and large employers aggressively look to hospitals and physicians to move from volume to value of healthcare services, the industry is seeing a resurgence in physician hospital organizations (PHOs).

With an eye toward shared savings agreements, PHOs provide a collaboration tool for physicians and hospitals to organize and participate in these evolving healthcare payment and delivery models.

During Physician Hospital Organizations: Developing a Collaborative Structure for Shared Savings Agreements, a 45-minute webinar on January 23rd, 2013, now available for replay, Greg Mertz, director, Healthcare Strategy Group and Travis Ansel, manager of strategic services, Healthcare Strategy Group, explore the key contractual elements to consider when creating a PHO for the purpose of participating in value-based payment models. You will get details on how to:

  • Navigate safe harbor and Stark regulations when designing a PHO;
  • Develop a compensation model that is a win/win for both the physicians and the hospital;
  • Create the appropriate mix of physicians in terms of numbers and type of physician for effective outcomes and savings;
  • Share data effectively and efficiently across the organization;
  • Change the healthcare consumption patterns for the chronically ill to generate savings; and
  • Move the culture of physicians and hospitals to a value-based healthcare system.

Currently Mr. Mertz leads the clinical integration service line within Healthcare Strategy Group.

In consulting engagements, Mr. Mertz has helped community and academic medical centers in assessing performance issues, developing strategies to improve organizational performance, and has addressed the need to enhance bottom line results through organizational redesign.

Recently he has been identified as a thought leader on the impact of healthcare reform proposals on hospital-physician relationships, specifically as this related to the evolution of care models under value-based purchasing. He has hosted or participated in national conference calls and pod casts, is an advisor to investment firms seeking opportunities in ACO development, and has authored articles on ACOs in national media, and is a chapter author for a book on the future of health care.

Mr. Mertz has undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Business Administration from Gettysburg College and a Master in Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from Widener University. He has served for more than 10 years as an adjunct assistant professor of health administration at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

Clinical integration of physicians should be a long-term goal for any PHO in development today.
